How It Works
Naismith's Rule (1892): Allow 1 hour for every 3 miles on flat ground, plus 1 hour for every 2,000 feet of ascent. This gives a base pace of about 3 mph. Rough terrain adds 25%, off-trail adds 50%. Heavy packs (>15 lbs) slow you about 0.5% per pound. Always plan to arrive at camp before dark.
