How It Works

A 7x9 ft tarp (3.5 oz silnylon) weighs 10 oz and shelters 1-2 people. Learn A-frame, lean-to, and plow point pitches before you need them. Trekking poles make excellent tarp supports. In snow, a snow trench takes 20 minutes to dig and provides wind-proof shelter. An emergency bivy (SOL, $15, 3.5 oz) is the minimum backup shelter for every hiker.
